twenty things i'd rather do than be on my phone
a non-exhaustive list for the limited time i have on this earth
While I pride myself on having healthy digital boundaries these days, I still have moments where I get back to old habits — incessantly checking notifications, mindlessly refreshing my feed or tapping through stories for fresh content to consume. In times like this, when I actually notice this unhealthy compulsion, I do my best to check myself, going back to this list of questions meant to challenge my internet impulses. Many stick out to me, but there is one question in particular that I take especially seriously. So much so, that I often put it pen to paper, physically writing down my answer as a way to remind myself that there’s an endless list of things I’d rather do with the limited time I have on this earth than be sucked into the metaverse (for more than I already am).
Below, I’ve re-shared that question, along with my non-exhaustive answer. Should you, too, find yourself wanting to breakaway from the temptations of the internet, I hope this piece reminds you to actually take a moment to list out (and do!) all the things you’d rather spend your time on.
When you think about the time you spend online, can you think of anything you would rather do with that time?
Call my parents or brothers
Play with my cat
Read a book — even if it’s just 10 pages or a chapter
Cuddle with my partner
Pay a visit to my elderly neighbor
Take a walk or go to the gym
Tidy my home, even for just 15 minutes
Plan a trip
Lay outside in the sun
Schedule time to volunteer — Reading to Kids is a personal favorite
Sit at a local coffeeshop and people watch
Organize a Seen Library gathering
Remove 5 pieces of clothing from my closet to donate
Visit a museum, gallery or exhibit
Catch up on other Substack pieces… I know, it’s still online but I swear it’s different? Some favorites to start: Halleta Alemu, Sara Jin Li, Infinite Jaz, Jessica DeFino
Allow myself to be bored and see where my mind takes me

The next time you find yourself glued to your phone, pull out your list — keep it in your notes app (which I now have done!) and refer to it each time you get that itch to open Instagram or TikTok. And refer to it often. Soon enough, maybe you’ll begin reaching for a book instead of your phone or even better, because you’re more present in what’s going on right in front of you, find that you’re not reaching for anything at all.

I just made my own list in my google keep app - thank you for this peace inducing idea
