no one asked: consumerism, linda evangelista, and the benefits to doing nothing
01: recent articles, posts, and thought-starters I found interesting that you might, too.
I read a lot of articles, listen to a lot of podcasts, and watch more TikToks than I’d like to admit. I send them to friends, share them to Instagram stories, post them on Twitter, hoping every single person seeing them will click and read. In reality, only a small fraction of people actually do. I’m hoping it will be different here and that those subscribed to this newsletter have an interest in the stuff I find fascinating, too. Here are some recent pieces and videos that have made me stop and reflect on my approach to fashion, beauty, and social media:
Aja Barber’s thread about trauma surrounding clothes, feeling left out, and seeking acceptance through shopping.
This article about the benefits of doing nothing – and how for too long, "...we have been trained too long to strive and not to enjoy."
A New York Times piece on Linda Evangelista and the Fantasies Fashion Sells. “But imagine the impact if Vogue had put someone, purported flaws and all, on the cover of its biggest issue of the year, and framed those flaws not as flaws at all but as simply part and parcel of a new kind of beauty, worthy of elevation; of being adorned in the most fabulous fashion. Glorious, just as it is.”
How the beauty industry replaced diet culture with toxic skincare culture, as told by Jessica DeFino on The Unpublishable.
A TikTok musing on what happens to us when our identity is based on looking back on photos of “memories” that weren’t memories at all – but staged content.
