When my friend Ali told me she was doing one-on-one creative sessions, I was intrigued. She told me that there were so many people looking for a soundboard to bounce ideas off of or wanting advice in working in the digital marketing world. She also told me that she gets a ton of questions about how to navigate social media — and that I should be offering 1:1 sessions for those who find themselves in a social media rut. I was hesitant.

While I’ve had years of experience strategizing social media for brands and even people, it was always in a more professional sense — monthly retainers, visual decks, detailed outlines, etc. I didn’t think anyone would want to pay to chat with me for 45 minutes about social media. I was wrong. I quietly promoted the service in one of my newsletters — shying away from sharing it to my social media in a more public way — and was still surprised by how many sign-ups there were. I just finished up my last meeting of the month and have to say, after my first month of doing these one-on-ones and speaking to business owners, writers, and aspiring content creators, I’ve realized this feeling towards social media is pretty universal. Everyone I spoke to felt a bit lost about what they should be posting in a time when social media feels so prescriptive.

No matter who I was speaking to, though, I found myself stressing this one thing, as obvious it may sound:
