how to be a woman on the internet
Are online friendships real? Is buying followers bad? Is social media a hotbed of conformity? What content makes you feel genuinely empowered? What makes you feel like you’re not enough – and why?
Sharing a (newish) newsletter brought to you by me and my friend, Ford that will serve as an imperfect exploration into social media – everything from influencer culture to toxic beauty standards to why we buy shit we don’t need. We’d ask – are online friendships real? Is buying followers bad? Is social media a hotbed of conformity? What content makes you feel genuinely empowered? What makes you feel like you’re not enough – and why?
There’s never been a great outlet for these conversations, so we turned to each other, and created a space to ask difficult questions about the systems we participate in.
Here’s what we’ve gathered so far:
As women online, we’re constantly encouraged to transform ourselves to fit a beauty standard, an algorithm, or a social media platform. If we want the internet to become a genuinely empowering place then we need to challenge that.
To challenge that, we need to talk about it – to have the conversations we’ve been encouraged, as women, not to have. Our experience in the industries that largely market to women – beauty, fashion, wellness, and influencing – has shown us that these conversations need to be pushed further.
Which is why our chats will no longer be behind closed doors. We hope opening things up will push us to find more meaningful ways to evolve our behavior on and offline, and we sincerely hope you’ll join us in that.
